Timothy Michling is instructor of oboe at Oakland University. An avid performer, Tim serves as principal oboe of the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra. He also plays oboe and English horn with the Flint and Rochester Symphony Orchestras, and serves as a supplemental oboist with the Toledo Symphony Orchestra. Tim performs as a substitute musician with professional orchestras throughout Southeastern Michigan and beyond, including the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra, Lansing Symphony Orchestra, West Michigan Symphony Orchestra, Saginaw Bay Symphony Orchestra, Jackson Symphony Orchestra, and Southwest Michigan Symphony Orchestra.
Tim is also an accomplished woodwind specialist. He was a member of the pit orchestra during the 2003-2004 North American Tour of Meredith Wilson's The Music Man, playing oboe, English horn, flute, piccolo, clarinet, and bassoon. He can also be heard in many area performances and folk music sessions on bagpipes, tin whistles, recorders, saxophones, and mandolin. Tim is a sought-after multi-instrumentalist and recording artist for classical, folk, and rock ensembles alike, and has performed with artists as diverse as Boyz II Men, Weird Al Yankovic, and the Detroit-based progressive rock band Tiles.
Tim earned his Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor, where he studied with Nancy-Ambrose King. In addition, he studied with Allan Vogel at the Colburn Conservatory of Music in Los Angeles, where he earned his Artist Diploma.
Tim enjoys a diverse career and academic background. He formerly worked as a legislative aide in the Michigan House of Representatives in Lansing and later as research associate for health policy with the Citizens Research Council of Michigan. He currently works as a research assistant for Michigan State University’s College of Human medicine where he is a doctoral candidate in epidemiology. Tim also holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor, as well as Master of Public Administration and Master of Public Health degrees from Wayne State University.
He has served on numerous boards for health care and arts organizations. An advocate for the arts in health and education, he believes ardently in the power of the arts to empower individuals and build stronger communities, and he remains passionately dedicated to community service, outreach, and education.
